If you'd like to schedule an appointment online, click here | - Conference Call Information - top Free Talk: Caring for Aging Parents: An Emotional Roller Coaster Adult children of elderly parents are often motivated to help their parents by a sense of duty. Their parents took care of them so now they need to take care of their parents. This sense of duty, taken too far, creates negative feelings: - Anger that your aging parents won't listen to your suggestions, especially when it's for their own safety
- Frustration at the demands your elderly parents put on you
- Resentment toward siblings who won't help you care for your aging parents
- Worry that your elderly parents will hurt themselves or someone else by continuing to live alone or drive
- Shame for having negative feelings at times
- Fear that something will happen to your aging parents that you could have prevented
- Anxiety over things that could happen to your elderly parents, especially as their health declines and they're living alone and/or continuing to drive
- Guilt that you should be doing more to help your aging parents
Signs that you might be taking your feelings of responsibility too far: - Your parents refuse to make changes for their own health and safety that leaves you feeling like you have to monitor them.
- There is so much to do for your parents that you end up neglecting yourself, your kids and your spouse.
- It's up to you to take care of your elderly parents because your siblings won't help.
- Your parents won't accept outside help so you have to take care of their needs.
I invite you to come and learn: - How you may be letting caring for your aging parents take over your life.
- How you can let yourself off the hook without neglecting your elderly parents.
- How to tap into the benefits of care giving.
You'll leave better prepared to handle the demands of caring for aging parents without feeling like you have to give up your life.
